Planning grounds work around a school year

School grounds work happens in a window of roughly eight weeks, and every contractor in the region is trying to fit into it.

Why the window is so tight

Access is the constraint, not weather. Play structures, courts, handrails and site furniture are all in constant use during term. That leaves the summer break, and it leaves it for everyone at once.

What to do in the spring

• Walk the grounds and photograph everything that needs attention, in March or April.
• Prioritise by safety first — flaking coatings on handled equipment, corroded handrails, damaged surfacing — then appearance.
• Get quotes before the end of term, not on the last day.
• Batch it. One mobilisation covering structures, benches, racks and railings costs far less than three separate visits.

What can be done in term time

Anything removable can leave site and come back finished. Benches, gates, bike racks and sign panels do not need the grounds to be empty — they need a truck.
