Wood is the easiest thing to ruin

Logs have soft spring growth between the harder grain lines. Hit them with the wrong media at the wrong pressure and the soft bands erode faster than the hard ones — you get a corrugated, fuzzy surface that takes stain unevenly and looks eroded forever. It cannot be undone.

The right answer is recycled crushed glass at low pressure: silica-free, cuts stain and paint efficiently, and leaves the grain intact. For ornate or carved work we drop to walnut shell. We test an inconspicuous section on every single house before we commit.

Why blasting beats sanding here

  • It reaches the profile. A sander rides the crown of every log and misses the cove. Media follows the shape.
  • It is faster by an order of magnitude — days instead of weeks on a full home.
  • No chemical strippers soaking into the timber or running into the garden.
  • Even take-off, so the new stain lands uniform instead of blotchy over sanded-through patches.

Cypress Hills and Elkwater

The specialists who do this work travel in from Calgary and Edmonton and bill for the trip — industry guidance puts lodging and travel around $3,000 on a two-week job. Elkwater is a forty-minute drive for us. On a Cypress Hills cabin we are structurally cheaper than anyone competing for it, and we can take a weekend job that is not worth their float.

Plan the finish firstThe strip is the smaller half of this project. Bare logs need to be sealed reasonably soon after — tell us who is staining and we will time the blast so the wood is not standing open.
