Preparing implements for winter storage

Hay trailer on a southeast Alberta farm yard

Equipment does not rust while it is working. It rusts sitting in a yard with product residue on it and moisture cycling through it for six months.

The short list

  • Wash off product residue. Fertiliser and chemical residue are corrosive and they concentrate as things dry.
  • Get it off the dirt where you can. Blocking wheels and jacks up frames stops ground moisture wicking.
  • Drain and empty everything that holds water.
  • Deal with bare metal now. Any spot where coating has been knocked off will spread over winter, not hold.
  • Grease exposed rod surfaces and anything machined.

The opportunity

The same period is the only window where refurbishment costs you nothing in working days. Machines sit for four or five months. If something is going to be stripped and coated, this is when.

Winter on the open ground around Seven Persons, Irvine and Cypress County is dry but relentlessly windy, and wind-driven snow finds every place a coating has already let go.

Book aheadFall and winter slots fill from harvest onward. The people who get the quiet-season pricing are the ones who booked in October.
