A maintenance calendar for a Cypress Hills cabin

A cabin that is used for four months and closed for eight has a different maintenance profile from a house. Most of the damage happens while nobody is there.
Spring open-up
- Walk the perimeter and look at the first course of logs for dark staining or softness.
- Check upward-facing checks for standing water and debris.
- Splash-test the south and west walls for water repellency.
- Look at chinking on the weather walls for separation after freeze-thaw.
Mid-season
- Cut vegetation back off the walls — anything touching holds moisture.
- Clear gutters and check that runoff is landing away from the base.
Fall close-up
- Photograph each elevation. Year-over-year photos show fade you will not notice in person.
- Deal with any bare or failing patch before it sits open through winter.
Every three to five years
Plan a proper assessment of the finish. If it has failed, book the strip for early season rather than discovering it in August when everyone else has too.
Elkwater runs a shorter working season than Medicine Hat does — snow lingers in the Cypress Hills weeks after the valley has dried out, and it comes back earlier in the fall. Anyone planning cabin work up there is working with a narrower window than a homeowner in town.
